AviStep is an Esri ArcGIS Online and Microsoft Azure hosted international planning tool to assess the impacts of renewable energy development on avian species, built in collaboration with BirdLife International (BLI). BLI is a world authority in developing maps of avian sensitivity and providing resources for bird conservation. The application and associated infrastructure were required to be cloud based, intuitive, and leverage BLI’s existing ArcGIS Online for spatial data. This talk will cover all aspects of the development of this application, from initial whiteboard and UI/UX process, to data challenges, hosting challenges and specific web frameworks and tools used in the development of the application.
